Here's the final movie review to catch up on. Sorry about that. With the holidays and going to Disneyland, it all sneaked up on me.

I have to be honest, I wasn't sure about this movie when I first heard about it. I figured that it would be fun and nice to learn some more Disney history. It wasn't until I saw the commercials for it that I started to warm up to the idea. And why not? Quite frankly, I like Disney. Probably more than others.

Seeing this movie was a lot of fun. Although I do know that there are some historical inaccuracies, it's still a fun movie to watch. The acting is awesome by everyone. I kind of wish that Collin Farrell got a little more recognition because he did an amazing job. That isn't to make any of the other actors' and actresses' recognition seem bad.

As it ended up I did like seeing Disney history on the big screen. It actually makes me miss working for Disney. Despite sometimes running into people that were less than appreciative, seeing the magic and the wonder was always inspiring. This movie may have made me like Disney more, if that's even possible.

There's a lot of fun to be had when seeing this movie. Yes, it will bore most children; but that isn't audience. It's the child still in the adult. The one that wonders how the magic is made. This gives that.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

I was just looking through my past posts and I just realized that I didn't write about the first movie. Whoops. A disclaimer: I haven't read the book. I know. I need to.

I love the world of The Lord of the Rings. Just the depth of the scenes is amazing. Just like the depth of the words in the books. So seeing this in The Hobbit has me excited to read the first book. (I know. It's a little different.)

I think the movie is a lot of fun. There's a lot of action, a lot of links to the other stories that we've seen on the big screen. The action is fun, the humor is good, and the struggle can be felt.

The next movie should be very entertaining. I don't think it will quite as long. I'm pretty sure everyone will want to see the finale as quickly as possible.

Frozen

I love this movie. I have known that this movie was in production since 2011 back when it was still called The Snow Queen. And, boy, am I glad that they changed the title. It isn't anything like the original fairytale. (Just like a bunch of other well-known Disney features.) Elements are there but now it's its own story.

There's so much to like about this movie. The animation is gorgeous. (And if you want to see more gorgeous art form this movie I recommend The Art of Frozen. So good.) There is an 'oopsy' that I know about but you'll have to watch the movie with me to find that out. I don't care about the 'oopsy' because everything else around was amazing.

There's a lot of fun in this movie, but there's is also a lot of sadness. The King and Queen of Arendelle decide that Anna and Elsa must be separated for both of their safety. Both girls end up growing sad and broken. Anna is the utterly confused as to why her best friend and sister would abandon her; Elsa is scared and scarred from a memory and by her powers. It's so sad to see the longing they both want for a relationship with each other but can't have. But there is happiness at the end of this story. This is how Disney works, people. ;)

That twist at the end had me gasping. (I bet my sister can vouched for this.) I wished that it wasn't so but that's how it was. Stupid expectations from knowing so much prior. Gah. That was my fault. Then the ending was so sweet. It could have gone down the normal Disney story, but this one had a touching ending. I loved seeing everyone so happy in the end.

Go see this! I have seen it twice and have heard the music more than I can count. And wait for the end of the credits. You won't be disappointed. ;)

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

I'm glad that I ended up seeing this movie twice. The first time was close to the release date with my sister and brother-in-law. The second time was with when I went out to California. It's interesting to see the different reactions of the people that I saw it with.

I wondered how this movie would do because sequels can be interesting, to say the least. But I was really happy when I left the theatre. I liked how close this was to the book but it was still a little different. The only thing that bugged me was that they had Katniss kiss Gale so many times. That was for a reason. Katniss was oblivious in the books until Gale surprised her with a kiss. The books aren't about a love triangle.

I liked how everything was set up. I liked the settings and the cinematography. I thought there was always something interesting to look at.

Although the end was set up differently, it was a fun movie. I can see why the movie makers made those changes. She's the protagonist, she's the hero. She's got to be a part of the mayhem at the end somehow. It was a lot of fun to see. I recommend it.

Thor: The Dark World

Finally catching up. Again, I'm trying to remember my impressions from the movie.

I liked seeing different realms, even if it was a glimpse. Of course, it left me wanting more but that's what Marvel movies always do to me. ;)

The humor that was thrown throughout was awesome. The best parts were Loki. Holy cow. The part when he looks like Captain America... I lost it. And I love that something as simple as "Ta Dah!" can still be funny.

I was definitely sad when certain things happened, but I should have known that they would go down since the movie was so light-hearted as well.

The CGI was good, as per usual. As was the choices for actors and actresses. It was strange for me to see Christopher Eccleston as a bad guy. I'm used to him running around saying, "Fantastic!" Not as a revenge driven maniac.

Stay till the end and you see some surprises. I love how all the Avenger movies are linked together. It makes the geek inside me happy. VERY happy.

Ender's Game

I'm trying to remember what I wanted to say after I originally saw this. I have a disclaimer: I haven't read the book, yet. Take that as you may.

What I do remember is being impressed. Really impressed. The first thing I was impressed with was the surrounding. Set or CGI it's pretty. There's always something impressive to look at. I especially liked the "arena" that the kids played their game. Throughout the movie the characters were always in an interesting setting.

I was also impressed by the acting. I liked Asa Butterfield in Hugo so I figured that he would do a good job, I just didn't know how good. This kid has got a future on his hands in Hollywood. There are so many emotions that Ender Wiggin has to go through and I think Asa did an excellent job at portraying all of them. The others actors did a good job. What else would you expect from Harrison Ford and Sir Ben Kingsley?

Since I hadn't read the book I was fairly shocked by the ending. I knew something was going to happen, I just didn't think that. It's a fun movie. It actually has bumped up Ender's Game on my to-read list. That's got to mean something, right?

The Wolverine

I had a lot of fun seeing this movie. There's so much to like about it. I liked the fact that a lot of it took place in Japan. It was a lot of fun to keep up with the story and the characters. It was nice to see that Logan was having some trouble with coming at peace with having to kill Jean. I also liked the fact that most of the Japanese characters were played by Japanese people. That's also a nice thing to see.

If you want to have a good time seeing a movie then go to this one. It's very fun. And make sure to stay for the credits. There's something cool in there. ;)

Monsters University

Being a pretty big fan of Disney, I was expecting Pixar's newest to be awesome. I loved the original story of Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley were funny and had a cool friendship. I was hoping for something better and unexpected. That didn't really happen. The movie isn't terrible like Disney's straight-to-store movies, but it wasn't Toy Story 2 or Toy Story 3 material.

Of course the animation is something to be marveled at. Everything feels like you can reach out and feel the textures of the buildings and the fur. It's amazing to look back at the original movie and then this one. Computer graphics have advanced so much. (That's especially true in the short before this movie.) It was pretty to watch.

The story wasn't all that bad either, it just wasn't perfect. The plot is weak and the ending isn't all that satisfying. There are plenty of funny moments and some interesting points in the story. It just feels like there is something missing. And any movie that needs two montages is overkilling it. I get why there were two, but it makes the movie feel like it wasn't comepletely thought through.

There are other things I wish they addressed in the movie. In the first movie, Mike makes a comment about Sulley being jealous of his good looks since the fourth grade. I figure it might have just been a joke, but it would have been nice to have this issue addressed. I also wish there was more of Randall Boggs. I wished that he had a sader story. This didn't feel that sad. The Abominable Snowman also makes an appearance but in the first movie it seems that Mike and Sulley had just met him. Apparently that isn't the case and this isn't addressed either.

To be honest, I wouldn't go see this in theaters. It's a movie to rent and show the family. There is something after the credits so wait for that.

Man of Steel

I have to be honest I wasn't sure that I wanted to see another Superman movie. I was recently re-introduced to the first and second ones and I thought they were hilarious. I realize that things are made for their time, but so were other classic movies and they weren't that cheesy. ;) I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised.

I have to say that I liked this retelling of the classic story. We all know it. Krypton is going to fail and Kal'El is sent to Earth to survive. I like how everything was presented in this version. Everything was more believable, especially in a modern world. Lois was more believable than the original.

There was a lot of CGI. And I mean A LOT. Don't get me wrong, it was pretty to watch. It was done beautifully. It's just... there was a lot of it. After some time you get bored of seeing so much fake stuff. And I'm not just talking about the flying around scenes; that's understandable. It would have been nice to see sets that were mostly hand-made and not 90% CGI.

When the movie started, I wondered how well General Zod's story-line would be integrated into the movie. This all seemed to work for me except for the fact when he and his followers were exiled in the the Phantom Zone, they were given a ship. Who in the world gives criminals something that can help them? I realize that it takes a lot for them to be free from the Phantom Zone but why arm them with something that can help their devious desires?

Also with Zod, he's planning on a global genocide. Things are going to get ugly and they got ugly. There was a lot of destruction. Be warned. There's a lot of smashing, death, and scared people. When you've got genocide as a plot point, this is going to happen. Then there's the fact that two super-strong aliens are battling it out there will be destruction. Just know that there's going to be a lot of it.

Even though there are points that I wasn't too fond of there is a lot of fun in the movie. It's a nice re-telling of an old classic. Go see it. ;)

Star Trek Into Darkness

Holy bananas was this movie a lot of fun. There was so much that I was hoping for with this movie. I was hoping that it was going to be just as awesome as the first one. I wasn't disappointed.

The actors did an awesome job. The casting for this moving was amazing. I guess what I should be saying is that the new additions to the casting are amazing. Because we knew that the cast already instated was so. Everyone fits their roles perfectly. The actors all knew what their characters were about and how to portray them to a tee. I think that having believable actors are the first step to having a good movie.

Everything was done beautifully. I believed that this could happen sometime in the future of Earth. The CGI is very believable. The story was a lot of fun, as well. In some way it's a simple story but there are characters who make it more interesting. I wish I could explain this more, but I would be spoiling a lot of it.

My father has seen all of the Star Trek movies out there and noticed some similarities of them to this one. He's kind of at ends with this. Personally, I think that the movie is paying homage to its past. The director and writers would know that Trekkies would catch on to this. The similarities also have some role switching going on and that's what my father wasn't sure about. Here's the thing, though. This isn't the old Star Trek. The future was changed in the first movie. We're now in an alternate reality and there can be some switching. No one knows how anything is going to happen anymore.

As I said previously, this movie is fun. Everything about it screams a good time. Go see it. You won't regret it. ;)

Iron Man 3

I was fortunate enough to see this movie the day before it was officially released. My dad was looking for some tickets and stumbled upon some that were for May 3rd at 10:30 p.m. Surprise was the first thing that came to mind when he told me. I didn't think that they would have been available the day of to buy. Kind of crazy.

Now to the movie, I had a fun time. I have enjoyed watching Marvel work all of The Avengers movie together. It nice to see some thought put into something like this. It makes it more enjoyable for fans. And I liked that Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) had some real consequences from his time in New York. He isn't able to blow it off like it was nothing. This shows that he's human.

The way the movie was shot was beautiful as was the CGI. The plot wasn't anything to fancy although there is an interesting surprise. It had made a few of the hard-core comic book readers a little miffed. I do think they could have avoided this by naming that character something completely different and it would have still worked. Maybe that's just me.

The end of the movie leaves a big question mark at the end. It makes you wonder how Iron Man is going to play in The Avengers 2. And stay after the credits. I watched so many people leave the theatre before they were done. I wondered if they had learned anything form the past Avenger movies. It's a fun little scene.

If you're up for some fun entertainment, see this movie. It's a lot of fun.

The Croods

I'll warn you now. I have issues with this movie. I was even skeptical when I saw the trailers. DreamWorks appears to be on a rollercoaster when it comes to their animation movies. Some are good and some are bad... really bad. *cough*sequels*coughs* I LOVE Rise of the Guardians and How to Train Your Dragon, but I don't love this one. It feels off.

The first issue I have is the beginning, or rather it felt like there were two beginnings. Eep, the protagonist, does this voice-over about how other families keep dying around them. That's all and great but a bit doom-and-gloom for the kids, don't ya think? The bloody hand-prints don't help with that much. And then I say there were two beginnings because setting up how the family works took WAY TOO LONG. That took almost twenty-five minutes to set-up, and that's a big percentage of a movie that's only ninety minutes long. But I guess they could do this because of my next point.

The story. Plot. Whatever you like to call it. There really isn't a story. Most of the whole story is about running as fast as you can away from impending danger. That's the main plot. Kind of boring after a while. Then other things are added in like the dad, Grug, having to accept that new ideas aren't all that bad. I get that. Everyone gets that. (They just forget it a lot of the time...) He also had to accept that this may be pushing himself away from the ones he loved. Okay, that part wasn't that bad. However, this leads me to the next point.

I really felt like there were two main characters. I had an issue with this. I was so ready to follow along with Eep. She's the interesting one. She's curious and brave while her family is not. Everything was evolving around her point of view, but that changed when Guy came along. This is when Grug became the main character. Suddenly we needed to be worried about him and his point-of-view. Once this happened there was this disconnect between the two halves. It would have been nice to see Grug's changes from Eep's perspective since it was already the established one. I don't know. It felt weird to invest in one character and then jump to the next.

And now to some of the good points. Seeing Eep and Guy falling for each other was pretty cute. This leads to a few of the funny parts of the movie. There are other funny parts that get you going, as well. The younger family members will definitely appreciate those moments. Of course the animation is good. This is DreamWorks after-all, and they got their start doing animation. Lots of color, lots of texture, all convincing.

So after all this blah-blah-blah, what's my stand? Is it entertaining? Yes. Is it worth watching in the theatre? No. That's why it only gets three stars.

The Host

I have to say I was hoping that this movie was going to be good. I'm a big fan of the book and I could only wish that the movie-makers could capture the essence of the film and much more. I wasn't disappointed.

Sure they changed quite of bit of the book in this film, but all the changes were for the better. I didn't care so much about little things like hair color. The way that is styled makes you forget about those kind of things. I liked how there was more shown from the perspective of the Seekers. It showed the the humans were in more trouble than the book led you to believe. The sacrifices that were made by the humans felt so much more real. I was even surprised by a couple of things.

I liked the way that Wanderer (Wanda) and Melanie conversed. It makes sense to have a voice-over to do the job. I was nervous that I was going to hate this part of the movie. Everything is her Wanda/Melanie's head in the book and so to see this done so well was nice. I think most of this was accomplished due to Saoirse Ronan. She was able to play both of them really well. She does a great job.

I also like that the movie has a little bit more background to Melanie. You get to see more of her past with her family and how she met Jared. Seeing more of their relationship helped to seal that the two of them are really in love. And speaking of love, that was another part I was nervous about. Seeing Wanda and Ian develop their relationship. I think it worked really well. There was some serious struggle between the two ladies about this. And seeing Ian soften up helped.

This movie is a lot of fun to watch. I just wish I could write more about it, unfortunately it has been some time since I saw it in the theatre. But you should go see it. It's a ton of fun.

Jack the Giant Slayer

I saw this movie about eight hours ago and I'm still trying to process what to write. Not because this movie makes you think, but for the opposite.

My interest was peeked by the idea of twisting the old story of Jack and the Beanstalk into something different. I always find the idea of doing that to a fairytale can be something extraordinary. I've had a bad run-in with one that was too easy, but I tried to keep an open mind when I saw this movie. Unfortunately, from the beginning, I had to close it again.

And when I say from the beginning, I mean form the beginning. I wish I knew the term for when you have two different scenes but can be shown together because they finish the other scene's sentences. It's not a montage, but I digress. The cinematography threw me off. The way that the scenes were shot you can tell that they weren't done in an interesting way. The way everything was shot was done the obvious way.

Then there's the plot. There really isn't one, and I suppose I wasn't expecting much. It was nice that there was a back story even though it was an easy choice. Giants are mad due to past history and Jack just happens to stumble into it. Throughout the whole movie I thought things were disjointed. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I know something didn't seem right. The ending didn't help with this. It left holes more than filling in the gaps.

Don't get me wrong, it's a fun movie to watch; it's just cheesy. It's fun to watch in the moment, but not a classic that you must watch again and again. And now that I've heard that it's a book, I wonder how it is. I'm skeptical but I might give it a try someday.

P.S. - There are parts that may frighten young kids. And everything with this deals with the Giants. The fact that they're man-eating is a big part. Some of their deaths are also quite gruesome.

Rise of the Guardians

Just finished this movie a hour and a half ago. Still processing everything but I do know that I liked it. I liked it a lot. After watching the movie I now want to read the children's books written by William Joyce known as "The Guardians of Childhood" series. It would be fun to see if the characters are the same in those as they are in the film.

Speaking of characters, oh my gosh. Funny, modern, and different. They certainly aren't like what I've been fed my whole life to think that their personas are. Santa isn't just the Jolly Fat Man; Easter Bunny isn't all cuddly; and etc, etc. I like the twist on all of them. It was engaging to have something new and not idealistic. They all seemed more real.

The animation is also stunning. DreamWorks definitely paid attention to detail with this one. The movement of Sandy's sand and Jack's ice is awesome. Very believable and fluid. The small details to each character is thought out really well.

The story is simple and does move pretty fast. Considering that most of us grew up with these characters throughout our lives, development wasn't absolutely necessary. We knew what the characters did for their jobs. We really didn't have to know their backgrounds, except for Jack. He is enigma, and is supposed to be for good reason. Having more to Tooth's reason for collecting teeth was cool. That was a nice touch. The humor throughout the movie was also great. You just had to love all of those characters more because of it.

This is a fun movie. It appeals to younger audiences as well as older ones. It's fun for the whole family and has a nice balance for both. You don't have to working about your brain melting due to sheer stupidity or the children being bored. Go see it. You'll enjoy it.

Breaking Dawn - Part 2

Finally saw this movie yesterday. I have some mixed feelings about this movie. I thought that it was fun to watch, but the more I think about it I'm not sure what to think. Does that make sense?

First off, I laughed three times when I shouldn't have. The first was when Bella ran through the forest. Everything was WAY too euphoric. I laughed hard. So hard that the girl to the left at me looked over at me. I thought it was cheese covered in cheese in the way it was handled. The second was during the sex scene. You'll know it when you see it. It's ridiculous. And the third was the setting up of the two sides of the face-off. The Quileute wolves came behind the 'good' vampires and then the shot came of overhead came above them. Everyone laughed in the theatre. It was so dramatic and then seeing how small their side was to the Volturi side was laughable. Pretty sure it wasn't supposed to be.

Also, as per usual, Kristen Stewart had barely any acting. I don't know how she gets away with it. The actor who played the Volturi leader, Marcus, had more feeling and that's saying something. He's supposed to look like it doesn't care due to his circumstances.

What I did like about the movie is that it stuck to the story of the book really well. Although, there isn't much to the book after Renesmee is born. The 'twist' at the end was even nice and followed it well. It sure had me going since I love certain characters. I won't say more on that subject because I don't wish to give it away.

I also liked that the end of the movie enveloped all of the movies together with the ending credits. Perhaps something that wasn't necessary, but very nice. It made me sad to see the franchise end. Mostly because I have been following the series for so long. It's always sad to see something go. (Definitely not as sad as watching the last Harry Potter film, though.)

If you are a fan of the series then you'll have fun watching the movie.

Skyfall

I completely forgot to write about this movie. When my family came down to visit me we saw this movie and I didn't have my laptop to write about it. Now I'm finally getting (and remembering) to do it.

This movie was all kinds of awesome. I loved how everything was handled. The plot is pretty simple actually, but the fact that it calls upon the older Bond movies is cool. It's as if this movie closes a chapter and opens another.

I really wish I could remember specific things as to why I loved this movie so much. Unfortunately, I can't because I was concentrated on being with my family while they were here. That has taken the space in my brain versus stuff about the movie.

All I know is that Bond fans and those who haven't seen Bond movies will like this movie. It's fun for everyone. ;)

Wreck-It Ralph

This is another movie that I had been waiting a long time for. When I knew that Disney was doing a movie about a video game character, I knew that would want to see it. The more that I found out, the more that I liked.

I loved the mix of new and old characters. And that they all had there own personality. I like the growth and development of each of the main ones as well. There is a back story to each of characters that are important to the story and you see a change happen to them all. The change happens either because of what happens to them or their interactions with each other. 

The video game references in this movie are AMAZING. Most casuals gamers will get most of the hidden things. But there are things that only big video game fans will get. Tiny things are all over the place as are more obvious things. There's even a lot of humor for the those who don't play games that often. I found that there's a lot of humor just meant for adults. Even the story. I overheard a kid ask their parent, "What just happened?" They couldn't see what the older audience saw. I love that about this movie.

The animation is, of course, spectacular. Each character gets they're own specific way of walking and moving depending on the feel of their game. It's cool how many ways they can move and have it be convincing.

I was smiling a laughing throughout this whole movie. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Especially since Disney put a short called "Paperman" in front of it. The animation is something new and stellar and the story is cute. In short: it's awesome. ;) Go see this movie. The family will enjoy it, especially the gamer in heart.

Frankenweenie

I have been waiting for this movie ever since I caught whiff of it. I'm a big fan of stop-motion animation and of Tim Burton. I was also intrigued that all of the sets and characters were done in black and white, and not shot in black and white. After watching the movie (on Oct. 5) I can see why this choice was made; and it was a good one.

Starting with the choice of black and white. I loved this choice. I have a hard time watching most things in black and white but I loved that this was all made that way. This movie is an homage to olden day Monster Movies. The black and white emphasized all of this.

The story line also did this. It was meant to be kid friendly in a way, but also the adults could appreciate it. There are themes in this movie that children won't understand. That's what I like about it. Children won't get as to why the experiments worked out differently, but the adults will if they think about it. The beginning of the movie also introduces adults to more mature themes at the start. The themes I could see were alienation, moral ethics, and naivete in understanding consequences. A lot of this reminds me of the original Frankenstein, and perhaps that's why I love it so much since it's my favorite book.

I loved this movie. If you're a fan of Tim Burton and old monster stories, go see it. You won't regret it. ;)

The Dark Knight Rises

FINALLY go the chance to see this movie. And I'm sure my family would've been there for the midnight show if it had not been for an younger brother returning from his mission that day and an older brother's wedding the next day. Either way, seeing then or now, it was worth it.

This sure was an awesome way to finish an awesome trilogy. I had heard from some that this movie was really dark, and so when I went to see it I was expecting The Dark Knight dark. But that didn't happen. Sure a lot of crap happens to people in it, but it isn't really near the second's level of dark. I'm not saying that this is a bad thing; in fact, I like this. I just wasn't expecting it. I suppose my level of dark is different than others, though.

I thought that Christopher Nolan did a good job choosing the right actors and actresses. I think they all played their characters very well. I was a tiny off-put about how Bane's voice wasn't deep and brooding, but it grew on me. Bane sure makes up for it with his ferocity.

Without trying to give away the plot, I like how this movie really "book-ends" the trilogy. I thought that this was done brilliantly. It's nice that this movie ties in with bits and pieces of the other two. You don't see that in movie trilogies often and I hope more are done this way. The ending also helps with this. It was handled very nicely.

I knew going into this movie that I couldn't trust anything or anyone on the screen. I'm sure glad that I went to the movie in this mindset. I know that this kept me on my toes. The big twists are awesome in this. And if I had remembered some things from Batman-cannon then I would've caught on to some of them faster.

Special effects are done very well and aren't cheesy. In some superhero movies you can tell when something is CGI'd but this one you couldn't tell. It made it seem like this could really happen in our time. Check one to being believable.

If you're a fan of the other movies and of Batman, go see this. It's worth it. ;)
